About the STEM Internship Program
Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP), Cleveland State University (CSU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) have partnered on a STEM internship initiative focused on keeping talent in our region by fostering relationships between local businesses and area college students. When working with GCP, your organization can leverage our strong connections with CSU and CWRU to place students in your existing internship program or to launch a new initiative. Plus, there’s funding available - up to $1,500 total per intern.
What Types of Internships are Available?
• Micro - During these short-term, 80-hour placements, college interns complete a single high impact project or assignment. • Part Time – These interns work 10-20 hours per week for approximately 10-12 weeks, helping you augment your staff and while getting an extended look at a potential hire. • Full Time - These 2–3-month experiences connect students to companies needing support with day-to-day operations or who are interested in nurturing their entry-level talent pipeline. • Co-Op - These full-time, multi-semester experiences allow students to gain experience by blending classroom learning with real-world experience.
We’re not a STEM Company. Can we Still Participate?
Yes! We’re able to place students at non-STEM companies provided they are in a STEM-related role.
We are a STEM Company, but we Need to Fill a Non-STEM Role. Can we Still Participate?
Yes! We’re able to place students in non-STEM roles as long as they are working at a STEM company.
Can I Work with Students from any College or University?
Due to grant funding stipulations, the STEM Internship Program can only support students from Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve University. Students from other colleges or universities are not eligible for participation.
Is There a Limit to the Number of Interns I can Work With?
Currently there is no limit to the number of interns you can onboard through the STEM Internship Program.
Can I Hire for Multiple Internship Positions?
Yes, you can hire for more than one internship position.
How do I Find Internship Candidates?
There are two ways to find internship candidates: 1. Rely on us to source your candidate(s): If you need us to source candidates for you, you’ll need to start the process by completing our Employer Matching Form. We’ll use the information you provide via the form to create a job posting for our student web page (www.steminternshipscle.com). Our team will work directly with CSU and CWRU to market available internship opportunities to their students. 2. Identify your own candidate(s): If you have a CSU or CWRU student in mind already, then contact Stefanie Steele at ssteele@greatercle.com or 216-592-2393 to begin the onboarding process. Employers who identify their own candidate(s) do NOT have to complete the Employer Matching Form, since a job posting is not needed to find an intern.
What Information do I Need to Complete the Employer Matching Form?
The Employer Matching Form does not offer a "Save and Continue Later" option, so please be prepared to complete it in one sitting. We recommend preparing all the required information listed below before filling out the form online: • Your Name (Will not be shared publicly) • Your Email Address (Will not be shared publicly) • Your Phone Number (Will not be shared publicly) • Company Name • Company Address • Company Website (if applicable) • Company LinkedIn Profile Address (if applicable) • The semester when the internship will take place (Spring or Summer 2025) • Intern’s Work Location (In-Person, Hybrid, or Remote) • What type of intern you’d like to host (Micro, Part Time, Full Time, or Co-Op) • Preferred Student Major • Internship Job Title • Project Description (In 2,500 characters or less, describe what your intern will be working on during the semester. Please note required skills, competencies, deliverables, etc.)
How Does the Matching Process Work?
For employers who do not have candidates identified, the process is as follows: 1. We will use the information your provided via the Employer Matching Form to create an internship job posting for our student web page www.steminternshipscle.com. 2. Students will review the web page and choose the internship job posting that best aligns with their major, skills, and interests, and complete an online application for consideration. 3. Our team will review student applications and resumes to find candidates who meet the requirements of the internship position. 4. Our team will share candidate information with employers. We typically send 2-3 qualified candidates per internship job posting for consideration. 5. Employers have the option to select students based on their resume alone, or to schedule interviews to speak with candidates prior to making final selections. Employers are responsible for arranging interviews with students. GCP, CSU, and CWRU do not coordinate scheduling. 6. Once the employer identifies the student(s) of their choice, they will: • Email the student to offer them the position in writing. Stefanie Steele (ssteele@greatercle.com) should be copied on this correspondence. • All students must receive an offer letter attached to their email containing the following information: - Company Name - Company Address - Job Title - Job Description - The address where the student will complete their work: * In-office positions will need your company address * Hybrid positions will need your company address and the student's address * Remote positions will need your company address and the student's address - The exact number of hours your intern will work per week - Intern’s start and end dates 7. Once the student accepts the position, our team will forward their offer letter to their college’s Career Services Office for processing. At this point, the student will connect with their Career Services Office to ensure they are compliant with all university requirements for program participation. 8. After the student’s school approves them for participation, the student will report to their first day of work and begin the internship experience. If there are additional onboarding steps required by your company (background checks, drug screening, etc.,) it’s the responsibility of the employer and the student to coordinate and execute those steps prior to the student’s first day of work.
How are Interns Paid?
Micro Interns: • Micro Interns are fully funded by STEM Internship Program grant funds. • They are not onboarded as company employees and are not paid via your company’s payroll system • Upon the successful completion of their micro internship, they are paid a $1,500 stipend/scholarship by their respective college. Part Time, Full Time, and Co-Op Interns: • These interns are onboarded as company employees and paid via your payroll system. • Upon successful completion of their internship, your company will invoice Greater Cleveland Partnership, and we will reimburse you for 25% of their salary, up to a maximum of $1,500 per intern.
Do Interns Have to Track Their Hours?
Part Time, Full Time, and Co-Op Interns will have their hours tracked via your company’s payroll system. You do not have to provide this documentation to GCP, CSU, or CWRU at the end of the internship. Micro Interns are not required to track their hours, but some employers choose to have their interns log their hours in an Excel spreadsheet. This spreadsheet does not have to be turned into GCP, CSU, or CWRU at the end of the internship.
How Does the Reimbursement Process for Part Time, Full Time, and Co-Op Interns Work?
Employers do not invoice Greater Cleveland Partnership for micro interns, as these students are fully paid by their college. You can invoice us for your part time, full time, or co-op student after they successfully complete their internship experience. After GCP receives your invoice, we will reimburse you for 25% of their salary, up to a maximum of $1,500 per intern. The invoice must be on company letterhead and contain the following information for each student: • Intern’s name • Company name • Intern’s job title (If applicable) • Dates the intern worked • Reimbursement amount requested Employers must also supply a completed W-9 form and ACH form (if you would like to be paid electronically.) After receiving these documents, Greater Cleveland Partnership will send a check to your company within 10 business days, or you’ll receive your electronic ACH payment within 2-3 business days after submission.
